Car accidents occur much more frequently than most people realize. Collisions are a leading cause of personal injury in the United States, as well as a primary source of financial losses. While it is true that all accidents have the potential to cause damages, it is also true that no two car accidents are the same.

Here, the car accident lawyers from Moody Law, P.A., serving Lakeland, FL, Winter Haven, FL, and Bartow, FL, discuss the common types of car accidents, including the factors that can lead to these crashes.

Rear-End Collisions

Rear-end collisions are the most common type of car accident. Rear-end collisions refer to situations in which one vehicle runs into, or strikes, the back of the vehicle in front of it. Rear-end collisions often (but not always) take place at low speeds, but they can still cause a lot of damage. Some of the most common causes of rear-end collisions include tailgating (following another driver too closely), driving while distracted, and speeding.

T-Bone Collisions

T-bone, or side impact collisions, happen when the front end of one vehicle crashes into the side of another. T-bone collisions most often take place in intersections, where vehicles are traveling in different directions. For instance, one vehicle may be driving straight through an intersection, and another driver may be turning left through the intersection. T-bone collisions are usually caused by a failure to follow posted traffic signs or signals, or misjudgment regarding another vehicle’s speed or location.

Side Swipe Accidents

As the name implies, a side swipe accident describes one in which the side of one vehicle swipes the side of another. These types of accidents occur between two vehicles that are traveling side-by-side in parallel lanes of traffic. Side swipe accidents usually occur when people are making a lane change, or simply veer out of their lane of traffic. The most common causes of side swipe accidents are distracted driving, driving while fatigued, and driving under the influence.

Head-On Collisions

Head-on collisions refer to accidents in which the front-end of one vehicle strikes the front-end of another. These accidents tend to take place on roads where there is little or no boundary dividing two lanes of opposite traffic, or when a driver is traveling the wrong way down a lane of traffic. Head-on collisions are usually caused by distracted driving, driving under the influence, poor traffic signage, or a lack of familiarity with an area. Head-on collisions are one of the most deadly types of car accidents.

Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents describe collisions in which a vehicle rolls over onto its roof. A rollover accident may involve a singular vehicle, or it could be part of another type of crash. Vehicles with uneven weight distribution, like SUVs and commercial trucks, are more likely to be involved in a rollover accident. Like head-on collisions, rollover accidents have a high rate of fatalities.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents

Multi-vehicle accidents are those that involve more than two vehicles. Any car accident can create a domino effect that leads to more than one vehicle impact, but the type of car crash that most frequently involves multiple vehicles is rear-end collisions.
